AUTHOR: HARPER KINKAID INTERVIEW : NEW BOOK: HEART BREAKER

Welcome Special guest Author
Harper Kincaid

Love wasn’t in the script…

Former man-eater Samantha Lockhart has been an actress long enough to be able to spot a smooth-talking player a mile away. Dark-haired, bourbon-eyed, a wicked smile…Kyle Masterson is one of the best.

From his bad-boy motorcycle boots to his good-ole-boy Southern drawl, everything about Kyle screams sex appeal. But after a tragedy hits close to home, Sam tries to convince herself she’s done with players on and off the stage.

Kyle, a V-twin-riding divorce attorney, has witnessed enough horror stories of love gone wrong to know that while women are welcome in his bed, they’re definitely not in his future. But once the petite, mercurial redhead catches his eye, he can’t think of anything—or anyone—else.

Sam’s trust doesn’t come easy, but the more time they spend together, the deeper they both fall. Yet just as they’re breaking through each other’s barriers, someone who doesn’t like being upstaged makes a deadly play of his own. And if Sam refuses, she may not be able to breathe a word to anyone…ever.

Warning: Contains a small-town thespian who isn’t easily fooled and a lawyer with a weakness for V-twin engines and sassy redheads.

Heart Breaker

Rad-Reader:  This story caught me totally off guard.  How did you come up with the storyline?

Harper:  I can honestly say there was nothing from my own life from which I drew from for this story line. That said, the core of HEART BREAKER centers on Samantha’s sense of home and family and how that changes for her over a very short amount of time.
Rad-Reader:  Does any of it resemble anyone you know personally?

Harper:  There’s a lot of me in Samantha: the way she curses like a sailor, her cavalier, flirtatious nature when it comes to the opposite sex, her passion for what she does for a living. Her sassy demeanor also belies her range of emotional sensitivity and depth; something else with which I can relate.
Rad-Reader:  I hate to admit this we are kindred spirits in this regard.  The nuns that thought they did such a good job over my Catholic upbringing are so red right now.  My mouth gets me in more trouble than I like to admit.  But I was good until…Hubby!  Did I just throw him under the bus? Yup!

Rad-Reader:  I enjoyed the banter between the sisters and the talking with no words.  Do you have a sister that you were able to pull experience from?

Harper:  I am an only child, but my close girlfriends are the sisters of my heart. I drew much from my relationships with them to portray Sam and Jessica’s intimate dynamic. Their bond is just as much of a love story of sorts as the one between Samantha and Kyle.

Rad-Reader:  Samantha had an awful boss (Her director) she was working for.  Why for heaven's sakes did she not report him?

Harper:  Ah, but that would have been too easy. The reality for many in the workplace – especially women – is that to complain would label her a ‘trouble-maker’ and may have unofficially blackballed her from future employment. She was trying to regain some credibility after bailing on a production the previous season due to the sudden death of her parents. So Samantha thought she had to ‘suck it up’ in order to prove herself to the theater company again.
Rad-Reader:  It is sad to think that we still think less of women that we still allow this behavior to continue.  Had to ask the question to get your take of the characters mindset.

Rad-Reader:  I have to say sometimes I did want to shake her and say “Really?”  Why wouldn’t her friends stick like glue to her knowing this guy was a threat?  She never followed any rules.

Harper:   I purposefully made Samantha overtly naïve because I wanted to demonstrate what so many women mistakenly do all the time: ignore their instincts. Her gut told her to be careful but her intellect rationalized that Derek had never escalated his poor behavior before, so she would be safe.
One of the most influential books of my life was Gavin DeBecker’s The Gift of Fear. In a nutshell, he states to not worry about figuring out a reason why something or someone feels ‘off’ – if it does, protect yourself. Too often, we ignore our intuition and get hurt.
Rad-Reader:  Had to ask this question also to get your take of the characters mind set.  But you are so right if the hairs on the back of your neck or the pit of your stomach says it is off it is.  This reminds me of the scary movies where they run towards the danger.  Not good.  By to way “chicken” don’t watch those.

Rad-Reader:  Why did she even go out with Kyle when he got all Alpha Male on her the first time?

Harper:  She was intensely attracted to him and was flattered he remembered her performances. What can I say? She’s a sucker for flattery and golden bourbon eyes.
Rad-Reader:  Hahaha! Got ya!

Rad-Reader:  Kyle left, leaving a note on the pillow and then a note with cash for a cab.  What was she thinking?  I know love makes us crazy she didn’t even make a fuss.  Why?

Harper:  Oh she was mortified and in the book she sulked around for days. But to call him up or confront him in person would've given him too much power and there was no way Sam was going to give him that!
Rad-Reader:  True I forgot she used to be the Alpha Female

Rad-Reader:  With all that hatred Derek Schiller had why was he still being allowed to work at all?

Harper:  Great question. Derek had two things going for him: 1. Friends in high places and, 2. His productions made a lot of money. You'd be surprised what people will put up with for those two factors to work in a theater company’s favor.
Rad-Reader:  What are we thinking? As a nation putting others at risk. For that almighty dollar.

Rad-Reader:  Max is such a cool character with a good heart except of the (revenge part.)  But he loves his daughter and now it looks like Jess too.  Will we see a book for Jess and Max?

Harper:  Me too! Look for Max and Jessica’s story in the third book, GIRL BREAKER.

Rad-Reader:  If we were to hear a song that was to tell us about your story what would it be?

Harper:  Probably Pat Benatar’s Heart Breaker of course ;)
Rad-Reader:  Hahaha tooo easy! Hahaha!!!!  But it does fit.

Rad-Reader:  If your book was made into a movie who would you like to play:

Samantha:  Erin Chambers

Kyle:  Robbie Amell

Jessica:  Bella Thorne

Max:  Chris Hemsworth

Jax:  Matt Lauria

Lauren:  Mae Whitman

Derek:  Christian Bale

Patrick:  Lance Gross

Harper:

Rad-Reader:  Nice!

Rad-Reader:  What is your next book about?

Harper:  Well, I have a book just released July 21st by Entangled Brazen, part of Tessa Bailey’s Serve series, called BIND ME BEFORE YOU GO.  Determined to put her past behind her, Cassidy Peyton moves to the Big Apple. But New York has a few dark secrets of its own, including Serve, an exclusive BDSM club. It's a place she isn't sure she's ready for, until she meets security expert David Cavill, who has more secrets than any man should. Secrets that forever shut down any possibility of love, marriage, or family. Yet Cassidy draws him in, an intoxicating combination of strength, candor, and sensuality that David can't resist. But as their bond deepens, Cassidy must decide if she can love a man whose heart is bound tighter than the form of bondage he craves...

Rad-Reader:  Where can our readers find you?

A woman with the heart of a revolutionary,

The mind of a pragmatist,

And the inappropriate humor of your tipsy BFF...
Born in California and raised in South Florida, I've moved around like a gypsy with a bounty on my head ever since. Along the way, I've worked as a community organizer, a professional matchmaker, an art teacher, a popular blogger, and a crisis counselor (to name a few). All the while, longing to have the guts and follow-through to do what I really wanted: to write and become a published author. That wish has finally come true and I'm so tickled I think I just peed a little.

What else? Hmm...I'm a kid of the Seventies and I love indie, lo-fi, complaint rock played on vinyl, wearing black, the theater, well-informed optimism, happy endings (both kinds), and making those close to me laugh 'til they snort. I'm a self-admitted change junkie, loving new experiences and places, but have now happily settled in the cutest lil' town, Vienna, Virginia.

Thanks so much for being with us and taking time out of your schedule to be with us.  I had a blast reading your book and being angry with two of your characters who will remain nameless.  One redeems himself but barely the other, never.  You are now stuck with us as part of our 1 Rad-Reader Review Family.
Thanks again,
Char
