RAVEL                          SHARI J. RYAN

At twenty-three, I’m left with a decision. The outcome could be life or death.

Trent hit me once, and I cried. Then he hit me again. And again. After a while, I got used to it, as I slept on the floor beside his bed, night after night.

Everyone told me to leave him, but I can't. He won't let me.

The moment I wanted to give up on myself and any form of hope, Kemper—a tall, sexy Marine just home from Afghanistan walked into my bar. With one look in his eyes, I saw pain that mirrored my own.

At first, I thought maybe he would be my prince charming, riding in to save me, but all it took was one tragedy for me to remember…fairy tales don’t exist in real life.

*The content in this book discusses domestic violence and is suitable for readers over 18.*

HUBBY'S REVIEW:
This was a very powerful book about two people going through two emotional events or trials. Daphne works in a bar and for the most part that is her only time to herself. She is in a verbal and physical abusive relationship and at times wonders how she got into it in the first place by looking back on her life through her journal. Kemper is a Marine just back from another tour and dealing with the loss of his best friend. They shared an apartment together but now he can’t go there because all he does is think about him. Kemper meets Daphne at the bar and he is sitting by himself and not with the other Marines. When she asks him what is wrong and he tells her instead of saying sorry she lifts a mug and offers a toast or salute to his fallen friend, bother in arms. This touches him and a connection is made between them. He helps her the rest of the night and when they leave she is dreading going home more. Once there the nightmare begins and she ends up sleeping on the floor like every night. Wanting to leave but afraid. The next day Kemper is back and helps her with opening the bar and by the third day the guy she is with comes into the bar trying to get her to go home but the Marines Kempner’s friends step in to get rid of him. She goes outside to talk to him and he hits her and by the time Kemper gets out there he is in his car driving off. This begins the time when her life begins to change and she is drawing on the strength he has to leave. He is also wanting to be with her but goes AWOL for a couple of days for his friend’s funeral and dealing or not dealing with having to clean out the apartment they share. They both want to be together but he feels it is not right because he might get redeployed and he does not want to get her hopes up. He soon realizes that he needs her as much as she needs him, and they decide to become a couple and date. When no sooner he has to redeploy in 4 weeks. Now they don’t know what to do but what they come up with is good. This is a story of two people helping each other and being there for one another, and though they are always working on something they come together as a couple, and have found strength through each other. A good story with a lot of emotion and there are scenes of her being abused, and of him seeing how his buddy was killed, so be aware. A good book. I got this book from Netgalley. I gave it 5 stars. MELTING HIS ALASKAN HEART

MELTING HIS ALASKAN HEART                REBECCA THOMAS

When Ethan Forrester’s hockey star brother begs him to take his place at a masquerade fundraiser due to illness, Ethan grudgingly agrees to help the cause. After all, he’ll be wearing a mask that covers the scar across his eye. No one will know his true identity.

Sports journalist Carly Hughes will do whatever it takes to procure the interview no one else can get from the NHL Stanley cup winning captain. After a few drinks she confesses her need for an exclusive interview or she’ll be fired. Ethan knows his brother as well as he knows himself—spilling a few details should keep the man’s privacy intact—mostly.

However, when their interview moves to the penthouse suite, Ethan tries to explain he’s not the Forrester brother she’s looking for, but Carly insists he keep his mask on.
Daylight brings some harsh truths, and a serious hangover. Carly not only forgot to record her interview, but she wakes up with a stranger in her bed. Or was this case of mistaken identity the best thing that’s ever happened to her?

HUBBY'S REVIEW:

Ethan does a favor for his hockey superstar bother by going to a fund raiser. That is also a masquerade party. He feels he only needs to make an appearance for a while then he can use the penthouse suite and go back to his life. Being a volunteer firefighter and working at the families lodge. His wife died in a car crash almost 5 years ago and during his attempt to rescue her he now has a scare on the side of his face that makes him feel worthless. When he sits to have a beer an angel sits down next to him. She is in a costume and her name is Carly and she works for an Alaskan magazine and she is wanting to get Dane Forester interview. The problem is she is not talking to Dane but his brother Ethan, but they are both attracted to one another and this takes both of them by surprise. The night goes along and he is making small talk and then agrees to do the interview when they end up in the penthouse and the interview does not take place, at least not the verbal type. In the morning he is feeling great and bad because he feels he tricked her into thinking that he was Dane, he now wants to come clean and when he does he does not listen to her when she says she is attracted to him. He thinks no one can be attracted to him and he cannot have someone else in his life. Now Carly must come up with ways to make him see that she wants to be with him and that she loves him and somehow that he can open up a little for her or he will die an old and lonely man. This was a good story and I like the characters but Carly was really a strong female and that was good to read. A very good book. I got this book from netgalley. I gave it 4 stars. From award-winning fanfic phenomenon Sophie Jackson, the third novel in the sexy and emotionally intense blockbuster A Pound of Flesh series.

A powerful new voice in modern romance, Sophie Jackson has crafted a passionate love story with unforgettable characters that will stay with you long after you’ve turned the last page.

HUBBY'S REVIEW;
This is a fantastic story about two people that have been friends since childhood and when things looked like they might have gotten them together Lexie has had problems since her father died right before they graduated from high school and she did not follow Riley to New York where he went to college. Also when they do see each the feelings they had for each other really never left but she is scared and he must win back her trust but she must also overcome her fears that started when her father died. A very good true to life love story that does not get settle right away, also emotional as well. A very good book. With good characters. I got this book from Netgalley. I gave it 5 stars. HUBBY'S REVIEW:

This is a book that describes more than just his experiences in combat. He set down certain life skills or practices and he did it at first with the intention for his children to have something from him and life lessons that he had learned. There is also a dialogue between his wife and him that I thought was very helpful for not only going into combat but also police work, and lines where you put your life on the line and your whole desire is to come home and to feel the strength from your home, your wife especially is vital. The way described their relationship made sense. Thought the entire book was good I like the chapter that he wrote for his daughter giving her strength and not relying on a man and being strong. Those were key for a father telling his daughter. A very good book. I got this book from Netgalley.  I give this 5 stars.  Follow us at www.1rad-readerreviews.com

THE ACCIDENTAL BOYFRIEND

THE ACCIDENTAL BOYFRIEND      MAGGIE DALLEN

Holly Sinclair is ready to have it all. She's even found her Mr. Right--a steady, reliable guy who just needs a little convincing. Now all the former wild child has to do is free herself of her very inconvenient attraction to Jack Everett. Not only does the notorious playboy and tabloid king seduce her at her sister's wedding, he follows her to Paris! Suddenly, Holly is alone with Jack in the most romantic city in the world--and his family is leaping to the wrong conclusions…

The world's most infamous bachelor has finally met his match. If Jack was the type to settle down, Holly would be the woman of his dreams. There's just one hitch: Holly actually believes she wants to marry Mr. Oh-So-Boring. Intent on proving that she deserves someone better, Jack finds himself playing the role of the perfect boyfriend…a little too well. If he's not careful, he might just lose this game--and his heart.

MY REVIEW:
When Holly Sinclair was met with a life changing crisis it made her look at her lifestyle differently.  You see ever since she turned 18 she had been traveling all over the world having wonderful fulfilling experiences.  She did however go to college and got her teacher’s degree and did that in some of the place as means to help her live.  But she only did it for short term subbing jobs in all types of schools.
Her family as well as her best friend not to mention her ex-boyfriend never approved of her lifestyle of jet setting.  They thought of it as her be a woman who could not settle down or commit.  They were always worried about her like she was a poor defenseless girl.  They saw her as irresponsible.
The thing was this crisis sent her home to try and to conform to everyone’s wishes to be this normal stay put woman.  You know the one?  A good teaching job, a husband (her BFF – Ben), a few children, and a home with a white picket fence and never traveling again.  There was just one huge glitch.  Benjamin her ex and BFF won’t get with the program.  He doesn’t believe she has changed so after months he won’t even date her.  But they hang out all the time.
But when her sister Ivy married wealthy businessman Daniel and he happened to be business partners with the tabloid playboy she had a crush on for forever she almost died.  In fact, Jack Everett was Ivy’s best friend.  So, at the wedding in Tuscany, Italy, Holly got up close and personal with Jack.  Not going as far as doing the nasty but being that he was the tabloid hottie, she should have figured there would be photographers hiding in the bushes.  She never thought that her own mother would be the one to fire the first shot.  It wasn’t a damning shot it was just of her and Jack so she felt like she had to explain it to Benjamin but he didn’t even react.
Then months later another one shows up.  This looks like they were kissing or at least getting ready too.  So she left the last day of school without clearing out her classroom to find Benjamin.  But when she did she didn’t get a chance to explain because when she walked in his house she sees his packed bags for a trip.  Now they either saw or talked to each other every night but he never said he was going anywhere so she was crushed but she was pissed too.  She worked hard to react asking when he planned on telling her he was going and planned on telling her he was going and when and where?  He said he planned on telling her that night at dinner.  He was leaving the next morning to Paris.
Now, then she almost lost it.  So rather than lose it she said it had been a long day.  She said to tired to go out and that he probably had things to do before his trip and she just left.  She left to go home and cry.  But then it came to her she could be the romantic one and follow him to Paris and booked a flight.
When she arrives she calls her pregnant sister who after 9 months is ready to deliver and says she followed Ben to Paris to be romantic.  Ivy is not happy at all.  Holly is the only one that doesn’t know that Ben is not interested in a relationship with her he just wants to be friends.  Holly says to tell the family and that she will check in a few days.  She’ll be searching all of France and hangs up.  Ivy goes into a panic and goes to talk to Daniel, Jack and Brunelli and explain that Holly is on a wild goose chase in Paris.  She says she needs to go after her.  But Daniel says no because she is due at any time.  So he says he will go but Jack says no he will go that Jack needs to stay with Ivy.  So starts the chase because you see Ben went to Paris, Texas not Paris, France.  Plus, Jack says he is doing it for his BFF Ivy and Daniel his business partner but he has unfinished business with Holly he can only handle in person.
I loved this story of two people who find their self-worth after allowing others to dictate it for so long.  In doing so find true love and a HEA.  I give this 5 stars.  Provided by netgalley.com.  Follow us at: www.1rad-readerreviews.com.

Today the report from Baylor University was not good at all.  The head football coach will be let go which is good.  The athletic director is placed on probation and president of the university Kenneth Starr was moved down to Chancellor.  Which I think both of those people should have been let go as well.  Starr is also still a professor at the law school how ironic.  These are all because of sexual misconduct charges filed against the school.  Also, because the football staff would try to talk women out of filing charges and there also is allegations of retaliation against the females who did file charges.  You also have a title 19 charge against the University.  That they were told to fix in 2011, but did not until 2014.  When they did they did not provide her a staff or funds to operate her office accordingly.  This is the same football program that had an athlete tried and put in prison for 20 years on some charges, not all.  This is supposed to be a Christian school, but their male leaders are not acting that way to their students, especially FEMALE!  How many more schools is this going on at and the University, football program is covering up the problem?  Hopefully more women will come forward.

My desperate need for her is inked on my body, it's the best I can do. But Hadley needs to hear the words . . . Growing up as foster kids, Hadley made me feel whole-sane. And what did I do? I destroyed our chance to be together. I ran out on Hadley when I should have stayed, and something broke between us. Now I'll do anything to fix it. I'll never leave her again. I won't ever let her feel afraid again. But the more I try to protect her from my pain, the more I just make things worse. I'm terrified that if I tell her everything, she'll never forgive me. I'm even more terrified that it may be too late to make her mine. I have to try to give her what she needs . . . it's a debt I'm determined to repay.

MY REVIEW:
Abandonment anyway it is served up is still abandonment.  Then you add a tragic or an abusive event on to that and we are talking head cases for sure.  We become overloaded with fear, doubt, insecurities, hopelessness, and loneliness.  All inside our own heads all because we lose our ability to trust most of all ourselves and others.
This is what is happening to Josh MacKay the storyteller.  You see he was left on a bus at five years old by his mom.  When she never came back at the end of the line the bus driver had to turn him over to the police where he ended up in foster care.
At his third home, I believe it was, he was being sexually abused nightly by his foster father.  About six weeks in a new girl also five years old came in her name was Hadley Mitchell.  She had lost her parents in a car accident.  With no other relatives they put her in foster care while they searched for her godfather.  Every night after Josh’s attack he would go to her and lay on the floor and break into ore shattered pieces.  For by her side he felt comfort.
When her godfather is found she is saved he’s happy for her yet sad for himself.  But it was Hadley that saved him.  You see she started throwing tantrums, trying to get to Josh.  Saying she has to save him.  She would run away and have panic attacks till finally Tom her godfather took her to see a doctor she could talk to which happened to be Simon MacKay.
Once he started treating her and believed her he and his wife Carmen started the paperwork to adopt Josh and put his abuser in prison.  He and Hadley were reunited and remained friends.  And their hearts were truly meshing.  Until they lost their virginity together and the world came crashing down around them.
You will love this story with all its harshness, true life, dysfunction, love, hope, laughter, joy, fear, pain, lots of tears, but most of all happiness.  This author very eloquently takes you on an emotional journey of healing for Josh and Hadley.
I have to say I had to step away at times for it was emotionally draining at times but so worth the read.  You will for sure need tissues because when the tears hit they will hit hard and it will be a messy cry.  Not a lot of books get me there so this author is amazing in her style of writing and her choice of making it come from Josh’s eyes, WOW!

I give this book gladly 5++++ stars.  Provided by netgalley.com.  Follow us at: www.1rad-readerreviews.com.

THE BAD BOY'S BABY

THE BAD BOY'S BABY            CINDI MADSEN

MY REVIEW:
Sometimes our decisions can have a lasting effect on what our futures will hold.  Yet when our past has been so rocky and the tapes in our heads bring us nothing but heartache, fears and pain.  What hope does that really give us?  That our dreams and our decisions either well thought out or spur of the moment could ever work out?
Well, those are the questions Emma Walker and Cam Brantley former classmates have asked themselves since leaving high school many times.  For totally different reasons.  Yet, three years ago soon after breaking up with a boyfriend of two years, who said she was just too boring and basically not good in bed too vanilla.  So to prove him wrong she dressed in a very short skirt, did her hair and makeup, and went to the Triple S bar & grill.   While sitting at the bar she sees the guy she crushed over all through high school Cam Brantley.
Cam had joined the Army right out of high school and was home on leave before shipping out on another tour the next day.  He was talking to his brother, Heath, about their good for nothing drunk father.  And the fact that he had gotten a stripper pregnant and that they now had a 5-year-old brother.  Heath was saying that he would keep an eye on him the way Cam did for him.  Cam was telling Heath their father was the perfect reason why he was never getting married or having kids ever.
When Cam looks over to the seats next to him he sees Emma and ask if she is that girl that had all the answers in school?  She rolls her eyes and says yes.  She scoots over and buys him a drink then he buys her one.  They leave together only getting as far as the parking lot and into his truck.  One thing leads to another…
Fast forward three years Emma puts herself through architecture school getting her degree.  Although she has not been able to land a job with a firm she has been given more responsibility with the construction company that she is working with.  One of which is one the job at the newest B & B on the mountain where she used to go hiking all the time.  She designed the new cabins that will be the rooms that they will be renting out for the visitors.  This is the first job in fact that she is the architect on the job where she drew up the plans on her own.  Although to cover his ass her boss has the architect he usually uses checking off each step along the way to be sure.  What is the ironic part the job is it’s for her best friend Quinn and her boyfriend Heath.  Yeah, that’s right Cam’s brother.
Now on this Monday like the past several she knocked on Quinn and Heath’s B & B’s front door so she could have morning coffee with them before her crew arrived.  Then she could talk to them about the progress of the cabins she had designed.  As she got ready to knock a second time the door opens she fell into a hard wall of none other than Cam.
When Quinn comes to great her and brings her to the kitchen for coffee.  The air is filled with tension of all kinds of energy.  All day she avoids Cam.  Most of the next until he corners her.  He wants her to know that she doesn’t need to feel awkward around him for what happened between them three years ago.  They agree kind of when he turns to leave she blurts out that she has a child.  He secretly is attracted to her and wanes but not totally he asks how old?  She says two.  Nothing remotely clicks so she can tell so she has to say it.  She says something to the effect of we do great alone always have and always will.  So no worries and she knew he never wanted any kids because she remembered from that night because she heard him and Heath talking about never wanting to get married or have kids.  So she could, she could see the faint beginnings of understanding of what she said.   Then she said, “We have a daughter.”
See how these two strangers work through the mind fields called their lives.  Not only that see how they have to plan for the future, but also lay the past to rest.  Can they do it for Zoey their daughter?

I really enjoyed this story because it kept it on an upbeat note.  Especially, when you have two characters with dark past.  Yet, the upbeat was not that sugar sweet that was to unbelievable.  I give this 5 ++++ stars.  Provided by netgalley.com.  Follow us at: www.1rad-readerreviews.com.
