“Bidding on The Billionaire”: Author Interview with – JM Stewart

Let’s Welcome

JM Stewart
Author of:

Rad-Reader:  What made Hannah branch off in the first place in the private chat with Cade?

JM:   I’m not entirely sure what you mean, but if you mean what made her decide to take talking about books to something more? I think it’s because she liked him, and wanted to see where it would go. But she’s afraid, she’s been hurt in the past and guards her heart carefully, so I think online was an easy middle ground.
But if you mean why agree to meet him in person? Same reason. She liked him and I think deep down, she was hoping he was as nice as he seemed.

Rad-Reader:  Being a lawyer Cade had to know how risky a lot of his behavior was.  Why worry after the fact?  Hannah didn’t.

JM:  I don’t think he was thinking about the risk until afterward. I think it was completely impulsive. And in that case, I think it’s normal for someone who doesn’t ordinarily do that sort of thing to stop after it’s over and wonder, “What the heck did I just do?” Hannah thinks it’s only temporary, and so she’s determined to enjoy her time with him. She’s almost playing a persona at first and has decided to throw caution to the wind.

Rad-Reader:  Was Hannah in some cases braver do you think at Cades own games?

JM:  I think she is. Cade’s used to following rules, it’s where he’s comfortable, and Hannah’s used to making her own way in the world, so she’s a little more willing to take chances.

Rad-Reader:  When Cade makes his first declaration to Hannah soon after arriving at his hotel.  Was that because he was already having feelings for her or past experiences?

JM:  I think it was a little bit of both. I think he was realizing he really liked her, and so it was a panic moment for him. He was remembering past experiences and wanted to protect himself from getting hurt again.

Rad-Reader:  Why does Cade keep withholding information when he ask for her to tell the truth and give him more information and trust?

JM:  Without going into too much detail (and giving away spoilers)…I think, for the most part, Cade is just the type of guy who holds his cards close to his chest. He needed to be really sure he could trust her before he offered that really deep information, and so when he did open up, it was a show of trust. I think, in part, it’s just the difference between them. Hannah is more of a “This is who I am” kind of person (at least, she’s trying to be), whereas Cade is used to having to put on a certain mask for the world.

Rad-Reader:  If Cade was so worried why didn’t he do a background check after he got her full name?

JM:  I think he would have seen it as an invasion of her privacy. He wanted to trust her, and so he while he was nervous, he wanted to give her the benefit of the doubt. Let her share herself with him.

Rad-Reader:  Cade talked about his parents yet they never make an appearance.  Why?

JM:  I write short novels (around 60k, about the length of a Harlequin), which means I focus on the main characters. It’s what I prefer to read—a short, focused novel. And his parents weren’t important to the core story beyond his fear of their reaction. But honestly, I find the whole “my parents hate you” a bit cliché and I didn’t want to play it out fully. See the next question for more about this, but it was Cade’s perception of them that mattered.

Rad-Reader:  What will Cade’s parent’s reaction be to Hannah?  Will we know at any time?

JM:  You won’t find out, because, in the end, Cade decides he doesn’t care what they think. He loves her, and to him, that’s all that matters. But for the sake of the question…I think they’d be a little apprehensive at first, his father especially until they really got to know her and realize a) she’s not after his money, and b) she makes him happy. I could see Hannah being willing to sign a pre-nup, though I don’t see Cade making her.

Rad-Reader:  Cade’s twin sister Christina seemed to accept Hannah and all those at the auction did too with the exception of Cade’s ex.  Was there anyone else who had a problem with it?

JM:  Well, the only people that really matter to him are the ones he’s closest to, so Christina and Sebastian. But no. I think the people he’s closest to trust Cade to know what’s good for him. And so, if Cade’s happy, they’re happy.

Rad-Reader:  Will Tina and Baz get together?  Or will they continue to hurt each other?

JM:  See book 2, Winning the Billionaire. ;)

Rad-Reader:  Does Baz and Cade make up?

JM:  Ditto to the previous question. See Winning the Billionaire. ;)

Rad-Reader:  What gave you this book idea?

JM:  Ha. I’d always wanted to try my hand at writing erotic, and one day decided to “just do it,” as the saying goes. When I started this book, I hadn’t intended for anybody else to see it. I wrote it for me and me alone. I took a couple of popular tropes I’d always wanted to try, tossed in a couple of characters, and just followed the muse. I’m a seat of the pants writer. Characters come to me and I just tell their story. This is what came out when Hannah and Cade introduced themselves to me. :)

Rad-Reader:  If you book was made into a movie who would you have play…

Hannah:  America Ferrera

Cade:  Tyler Hoechlin

Christina:  Eva Green

Sabastian:  Jesse Metcalfe

Maddie:  Emma Stone

JM:  Oohh, fun question! BTW, most of the links I included below are the pics I pinned on my Pinterest boards.

Hannah:   I had a hard time finding an exact match for her, so I’d agree that America Ferrera would be a great fit.

Cade:  I saw a picture of an older Tom Welling once, and he’s been my Cade ever since.

Christina:  Odette Annable or Jennifer Connelly. Though I think Jennifer Connelly is probably closer.

Sabastian:  Ian Somerhalder. It’s the cocky gleam in his eye that does it for me.
Maddie:  Amy Paffrath

Rad-Reader:  What song out there today best describes your main characters or the story you wrote?  My Choice
“Never Had A Dream Come True” – S Club 7

JM:   This is a hard one. For just about every book, I always have one song that catches me, because it seems to tell the characters’ story. For Christina and Sebastian, it was Words by Christina Perri and Wrong Guy by Whitney Wolanin, but for this book, I didn’t really have one.

"Words" - Christina Perri (Christina & Sebastian)

"Wrong Guy" - Whitney Wolanin

Rad-Reader:  Will Maddie find a love interest?

JM:  See book 3, Bargaining for the Billionaire ;)

Rad-Reader:  What do you like to do during your free time?

JM:  Play computer games (Diner Dash, Delicious Emily, etc), read, catch up on my TV shows, cook/bake.

Rad-Reader:  What is your next project and when is it coming out?

JM:  My agent and I have just accepted a contract for a 3 book series with Forever Yours. At the time of writing this, we don’t yet have dates or titles, but the premise of each book revolves around former Navy SEALs and a matchmaking service.
