With Pat

Chuck Bednarik, passed away last Saturday. He was the last player to play both offense and defense. He was also known for being one of the most devastating tacklers in the history of pro football he played for the Eagles from 1949 to 1962 and was a key member of their last championship team from 1960. Before football he served in the United States Army Air Forces as a waist gunner on a B-24 which flew on 30 combat missions over Germany. After his service he attended the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia, he played center and linebacker and was a three time All-American. He was also third in the voting for the Heisman Trophy in 1948 and won the Maxwell Award that year. He was the first player selected that year starring on both offense as center and defense as linebacker and was part of the 1949 Championship team for the Eagles. He is also known for the hit that knocked out Frank Gifford, who was out of football for 18 months. He also got into a quarrel with chuck Noll when he was a player for the Cleveland Browns. He was still vocal against people who also said they were two way players because they played wide receiver and corner back, which did not have as much contact as the center and linebacker which he played. He also spoke out on today’s salaries, pensions including his, and one-way players. I must say after watching football from 60’s, 70’s, today’s game has changed and some things are for the best but some of the changes have watered down the game and now they want to make more so maybe it will be time to pull out the old tapes. Any way he was a fantastic player and one tough son of a gun to be a waist gunner in a B-24 which had a high mortality rate in WWII and make 30 missions he was another one of those unsung heroes.

  1. tonight first games Notre Dame wins and moves on. Then Wisconsin pulls out a victory in a good game against North Carolina. Now you have Kentucky up by 20 on West Virginia, i don't think they are coming back from that deficit.

  2. i don't know how other people feel, but i was disappointed in the Cowboys signing Greg Hardy, to a contract. i was equally disappointed in Jerry Jones daughter coming out in support of the signing. he was found guilty and is appealing the verdict or conviction. now i found out that the charges have been dismiss because they cannot find Holder who was living with Hardy at the time. my question is anyone looking for her? why do we still say things against Vick, who did his time but violence against women appear to be swept away, not just by pro football but also in our society as a whole.

  3. now that baseball season is about a week or so away. the big talk is what are the Cubs going to do with their rookie outfielder? send him to the minor leagues for the month of the season so they can have an extra year before he becomes a free agent, or let him play when they open the season and then take their chances in the future in signing him and some of their other top youngsters when they become free agents. i would let him play and go for the top to make the playoffs it will pay off in the long run. if they send him down and don't make the playoffs because of a game or two that will be bad for the team.

  4. i with agree with Bill Belichick, on the NFL saying that they don't have the money to spend on extra cameras for reviews on the end zone, but can spend "top dollar" for international games. when the league brought in over 6 billion dollars last year but they don't want to improve on something that is actually helpful to the game i don't get it. then they want to change the whole extra point thing after they already took away for the most part the kick return which was an exciting part of the game. their logic or lac of any is really disturbing. i will say they will probably change the game so much i will probably stop watching it. not there yet but getting close.
