JESSE'S GIRL (Hundred Oaks)

JESSE'S GIRL                                        MIRANDA KENNEALLY

Everyone at Hundred Oaks High knows that career mentoring day is a joke. So when Maya Henry said she wanted to be a rock star, she never imagined she’d get to shadow *the* Jesse Scott, Nashville’s teen idol.

But spending the day with Jesse is far from a dream come true. He’s as gorgeous as his music, but seeing all that he’s accomplished is just a reminder of everything Maya’s lost: her trust, her boyfriend, their band, and any chance to play the music she craves. Not to mention that Jesse’s pushy and opinionated. He made it on his own, and he thinks Maya’s playing backup to other people’s dreams. Does she have what it takes to follow her heart—and go solo?

MY REVIEW:
This was a new author for me.  I have to say I really enjoyed her characters and I’m really sorry it took me so long to get to her book.
This was a YA book that was about a few refreshing high school students on the verge of graduating.  Maya Henry is a girl who missed her era by a few decades.  She is a total eighties pop girl who has learned to play a mean guitar from her dad, uncle, and YouTube.
She put together her own little eighties cover band hand picking each member.  Where she was lead guitar a backup singer.  Before, she knew it thought they had turned into a metals band.  She and her lead singer (tutor) had a side thing happening.
Then, the school has a shadow day.  Where she arrives at school to find out she’s going to be shadowing a real-life rock star of country music for a day.  You see the principal, Dr. Salter’s nephew is Jesse Scott, the country rock star so he has an in.  Most girls would be happy but Maya is not.  She hates country music because her mom loves and plays Dolly Parton songs over and over.  She figures though she might be able to learn something from a professional so why not make something positive out of the experience.  That Friday night, Dr. Salter’s takes her to Jesse’s concert and backstage to meet him.
Let’s just say that didn’t go as well as his uncle had planned.  You see Jesse had been performing since he was ten.  Everyone was wanting more from him than he has to give all the time.  In fact, most of the time they were demanding it.  He never knew who he could trust not even his parents.
That is until he meets Maya.  She is like an electric eel that shocks his system with life every time he’s around her.  Which scares him.  In fact, he’s so rude to her she’s willing to get an “F” grade than to deal with him again after he asks her to leave.  When he, forgot he agreed to let her shadow him.
She flat-out basically tells him to “kick rocks” that she was out of there.  So, not the reaction he thought he would get.  This sweet southern beauty had a fire in her eye and an inner glow that sparked an interest in him.  He had to do this for his uncle but for himself also.
Jesse has so many wounds and inner turmoil’s he needs to overcome.  Maya seems to be his soft place to land.  Yet, she is a strong young girl who won’t allow another guy to hurt her heart again.  So, this time she speaks up and Jesse listens.
Nice light summer reading is what this book is for sure.  Really funny and heartfelt as well as heartbreaking too.  I give this:  4 stars.  Provided by netgalley.com.
