Unable to trust his family with the details of his personal investigation, Reed enlists his friend, suspended cop Ellery Hathaway, to join his quest in Vegas. Ellery has experience with both troubled families and diabolical murderers, having narrowly escaped from each of them. She's eager to skip town, too, because her own father, who abandoned her years ago, is suddenly desperate to get back in contact. He also has a secret that could change her life forever, if Ellery will let him close enough to hear it.
Far from home and relying only on each other, Reed and Ellery discover young Camilla had snared the attention of dangerous men, any of whom might have wanted to shut her up for good. They start tracing his twisted family history, knowing the path leads back to a vicious killer—one who has been hiding in plain sight for forty years and isn't about to give up now.
|Two characters with tragic pasts work together to try to solve a forty-year-old cold case from Las Vegas. Reed Markham who is an FBI agent has always wondered who murdered his mother, now with some new information he has gone to a friend’s home to ask her to join him in Vegas to help solve this case.
Reed was an infant when someone murdered his mother he was in a crib in another room when it took place. The person he has gone to ask to help him has seen her own tragedy. Ellery Hathaway is a suspended cop right now but when she was 14 she was raped and tortured by a serial killer she survived, she would go on to survive two more attacks. Both are working through their own pasts and their own demons whether they are memories or people. For Reed, he thinks the person who murders his mother could be his adopted father. Ellery is wanting to get away from her father is back in town wanting to make contact with her.
The story then moves to Vegas and you bring in a whole different set of characters, yet the two of them will work together to solve this puzzle. The author shows you the difference in the way each person works a case and how together they have strengths and weaknesses. They also still have their own demons that they must work through every step of the way. But I can still relate with the character not knowing your birth mom you still feel connected somehow and really want to do this for her to find her killer. A very good story that will keep you turning the pages until the very end. very much a must-read. I received this book from Netgalley.com I gave it 5 stars. Follow us at
